Harlan was sitting on a park bench when he saw the paramedics stopping at an apartment complex right across the street. What could be going on? Turns out, that a former schoolmate of his (her name is Gwendolyn) received a brutal beat down by her abusive, ghetto narcissistic fiance', Clyde. Clyde was getting arrested & going to jail. Harlan got into his minivan & followed the ambulance to the emergency room. After all, he was single.
Harlan was desperate enough that he lied & said that Gwendolyn was his older sister, so that he could get access to seeing her in the hospital. Gwendolyn was in a coma. She eventually recovered from her injuries. She felt touched that Harlan was concerned about her. He wishes that he would've known, beforehand, what was going on. Harlan hadn't seen or contacted Gwendolyn in years.
Gwendolyn was finally discharged from the hospital. Harlan offered to pick up where Clyde left off, but promised to be a better person. Right after Harlan & Gwendolyn arrived at Harlan's house, he got on his knees & proposed to her. She instantly accepted. Now, HE'S her fiance', instead of Clyde. They eventually got married, but due to Gwendolyn's injuries, she wasn't able to have children. In fact, it was too painful for her to have sex. What did Clyde DO TO HER?!
Gwendolyn didn't want to adopt any children, & she was allergic to pet dander. Harlan accepted that. He just wanted her safe & out of harm's way.
