Auntie Grandma

There's a woman at the local church, named Mrs. Mavis Wardlow. People refer to her as, "Auntie Grandma" & pronounce it the New Orleans way. Like, "AN-tee GRUH-maw". Not UHN-tee. More like ain't tee. She's old, old, old. Like, old as dirt! She's like both an auntie & a grandma to everyone, depending on how old you are. She's loved by all.

She suffers from aphasia, along with dementia, but still kinda sorta has some of her senses. Her children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren fight tooth & nail to keep her out of those nursing homes. The church takes care of her. She's a widow. She doesn't rely on any government benefits at all. She doesn't want them. She doesn't like them. She doesn't believe in them.

One Sunday morning at the church, before Sunday school, the pastor's wife was making coffee & muffins for everyone. Usually, everyone crowds around Mrs. Mavis while everything is being prepared, & they love to hear her make people laugh.

On this particular Sunday morning, 1 of the teenaged boys tried to get his friends to get Mrs. Mavis talking, so that they could laugh. They do this in a loving, endearing way. Not to insult, ridicule, mock or make fun of her. Another of the boys walked up to her & tried to straighten out her lopsided hat. She must've been grumpy & didn't want to be bothered that morning.

The boy said, "Mrs. Mavis. Wait a minute. Lemme fix your hat. It's crooked."

Mrs. Mavis shoo'ed him off & screamed with a high-pitched voice, "YOUUUUUUUUU! & pointed at him."

He said, "But Mrs. Mavis. Let me fix your hat."

She became even angrier & said, "Chile, please!" (Translates to, Child, please!)

He asked, "Chile, please? Chile, please, for what? I'm just trying to help you out."

She pointed at him again & said, " 'Cause. You don't know no goodah!" (Translates to, "Because. You don't know any better!)

Everyone got their laughs in for the day.

& the boy looked confused. He said, "I don't mean any disrespect. I will back off.

Once she got her coffee & muffins, she was happy, hugging & kissing everyone. & she was even happier to hear the Word of God for the day.

THE END
